How to plan a majlis setup your guests will enjoy

A majlis with plum sofas, patterned cushions, a green-topped card table and a coffee pot

The majlis is the first thing your guests see, and where they spend most of their time.
A good setup starts with a clear plan, before you choose a single piece.

Start with the space and the guests

Answer two questions first:

  • How many guests do you expect?
  • How much space do you have, and is it indoors or outdoors?

Take a photo of the space and measure it. The real space decides how many seats fit, not the other way round.

Think about who is coming

Ask yourself who will be there.
Your guests may include older relatives, children and families who talk for hours.
What suits a young guest on the floor may not suit someone who finds it hard to sit down and get up.

Choose the type of seating

  • Floor seating: suits family gatherings, and usually fits more people in the same space.
  • Sofas: easier for older guests and for anyone who prefers to sit higher.
  • Both together: gives every guest the option that suits them.

Arrange the seating so people can talk

Face the seats towards each other, or set them in a U shape, so guests can see one another.
Avoid one long row. It makes conversation hard between the two ends.
Put a small table near each group for coffee and refreshments.

Don't forget floor covering and lighting

  • Rugs or carpet to cover the floor and mark the edges of the majlis.
  • Enough cushions and backrests for every guest.
  • Soft lighting that does not tire the eyes.
  • Heating or cooling to suit the season, if the majlis is outdoors.

Leave a path for serving

Whoever carries the coffee and refreshments needs a clear path, without squeezing past people who are seated.
So do not fill the whole space with furniture.

Decide where the coffee corner goes

Put the coffee and refreshments corner close to the majlis, not in the middle of it.
Guests can then reach it easily without breaking up the conversation between those seated.
Keep the cups, plates and serving tools there, so the majlis stays tidy.

Think about the time of day

A daytime majlis needs shade and airflow.
An evening majlis needs enough light, and some warmth if the weather is cold.
Choose the seating and floor covering to suit the time and the season.

Get the details ready before you order

Before you contact a rental company, write down:

  • The number of guests you expect.
  • The location and size of the majlis.
  • The type of seating you prefer.
  • The date of the occasion.
